lunes - no escuela martes/miércoles It's showtime!! Today you will write your final essay for Spanish 1! For you 8th graders, this will be used in combination with your midterm score, overall class performance, and my recommendation to determine if you are ready to move on to Spanish 2 in the fall. For you 7th graders, it will count heavily on your 4th quarter grade, but it will not determine high school credit. Since we have next year together, we will deal with this separately at that time. You will have today and tomorrow to work on your essay. It is due Wednesday night. We normally would use one class period to write this essay, so I would encourage you spend 30-45 minutes on it. I trust that you will do it on your own, without notes, and clearly without ANY use of an online translator AT ALL. Not one word. Trust me - I can tell. Look at the picture below. You can also print the image off (below in pink) if you want to look at a hard copy. Write as many sentences as you can to describe what is going on and what you observe in the scene, striving for at least 12 or more quality sentences in Spanish. I'll be looking for variety in your verbs, accuracy in your endings, and some progressive ("ING") or maybe even past tense (not required). Let your vocabulary shine here - think of it as your time to show me all that you do know in Spanish! If you run into a word you don't know, see if you can say it in a different or simpler way. If not, just let that thought go and write about something else.
Hand write your essay on the file (above right in purple) which includes some helpful writing prompts, or on any lined paper. Write as neatly as you can. You do not need to skip lines. Use MLA heading at the top of the paper. You will be given a zero if I suspect you used Google Translate (or other). And again, trust me when I say I ALWAYS know! It is very obvious to me as your teacher. While I tolerated this on some of your assignments during remote learning, I won't on this. Don't do it. It's just not worth it. Show me what YOU know! Doing your own work in Spanish is the best compliment you can give me as your teacher. Send me a picture or scan of your HANDWRITTEN essay by Wednesday evening. This is your last Spanish work of the school year - make it your best! jueves You're almost there! Use today to catch up on any missing work - everything is due by Friday at 5 en punto! Otherwise, please fill out this survey on la clase de español. Since YOU are the most important part of my job, I really appreciate your input! viernes Well, you made it! I knew you would! It was un poquito difícil at times, but you did great! And now, it's time to say "adiós!" Eighth graders, I wish so much that we could have finished this year out together, but it is truly one we will never forget. Make me proud at the high school! And come back and visit me at SEAS when you're around! Seventh graders, you're stuck with me. But I can't wait to have fun learning together again! :) And we'll make next school year asombroso, no matter what! Stay safe and have a wonderful summer vacation! You've certainly earned THIS one! I miss you all and can't wait til we can be together again. Oh, and one more thing: don't forget to say "adiós" to la muñeca. She'll be just around the corner waiting for you...with her amigas! ;) ¡Tengan un gran verano! Chao! lunes Well, it's been two months that you've been quarantined... you hanging in there? Today you will create a selfie slide to show me how you're coping! :) Snap a selfie of yourself doing something at home or outside. Upload it to PowerPoint and add three good sentences in Spanish to describe what's going on in the picture. What are you doing? Why? Where are you? What else is in the picture? Share it with me on Powerpoint by Friday. martes I'm into making lists... you might remember all the Post-its all over mi escritorio. Today I'd like you to walk around your casa and make UNA LISTA of 25 things you can name in Spanish. Too fácil? Go for 50! Send me a pic or scan of your handwritten list by Friday, por favor. No using online translators! miércoles We're going to do something officially unofficial today. I want you to take part of the NATIONAL SPANISH EXAM! What, Señora?? Estás loca?! You can actually take last year's exam for funsies online. (This hints at my whole nerd thing again, doesn't it? Kinda proud...) The high school often takes this exam for real in the spring each year to see how students compare nationally to other Spanish language learners, so consider it early practice for that! Follow this link https://www.nationalspanishexam.org/index.php/exam-preparation/past-examinations Click on Level 1 under "Achievement - Vocabulary and Grammar." See picture below.
Click "Start Now." It looks official, but don't be nervous - this is just for FUNSIES!
Scroll past all that name and personal information stuff.... yes, even past the "Warning" section.... (you rebel, you!). Keep scrolling until you get to "Part One. Vocabulary." You have arrived! Now it's showtime! Without using any notes or online translation, just see how you do! You will get full credit no matter what your score. Don't worry. Take a screenshot or use the snipping tool to send me your score by Friday as proof that you did it. If you are really curious, you can also take the Level 1 "Proficiency - Reading and Listening" part. Here you'll answer questions based on reading authentic texts as well as listening to slow-paced, native speakers. This is totally optional and just more fun for you fellow nerds out there. ;) jueves You know I'm a Simon's Cat fan, so he's going to help me out on today's assignment. I can totally relate to the picture below, with any one of our tres gatos at home jumping up and getting in the way while I'm trying to work! (Plus, notice that coffee! Es perfecto!)
Read the statements in Spanish below and decide if they are cierto ó falso based on el dibujo.

Si puedes leer y entender esto, sabes lo que tienes que hacer... absolutamente nada! Vete afuera y ...
¡ten un gran fin de semana!
lunes Today you will watch a video from one of my favorite series, "El Gato de Simon." There is no talking, only action, which is why I like it so much for Spanish. Watch the video below and write 10 quality sentences describing what you observe and/or what happens during the video. If you have a cat yourself at home, you will totally relate. ;) Hand write these, por favor, and send me a picture or scan by Friday. martes I have another Gimkit ready for you! This one is called "Descripciones" and is a mix of all kinds of words we have learned this year to describe things. These are words you will use over and over again, no matter the topic, so it is good to review them. Click on your class button below to access or go directly to gimkit.com and login to view your assignment. Earn $300K by Friday! "Shop" while you play to earn money faster! miércoles Let's play Quizlet Live together today at 12! We'll play for only 15 minutes, and will review the ever important VERBOS! I will email you the code to join separately on Wednesday morning. If you can't join us at that time, no hay problema... BUT you will need to complete a round of Quizlet LEARN (do just the multiple choice option) on Verbs 1-11 by Friday instead . If you are playing live with us, you do NOT need to do this! jueves Today's activity is based on the activity we did in our Zoom class this week, "Categorias." Write a list in Spanish of at least 10 things you can do during quarantine! Each idea should be a simple verb phrase using "puedes + another verb" which means "you can ..." For example, "puedes ver tu profe favorita en Zoom," ;) or "puedes enviar una carta a tus amigos." Again, I would love to see your hand written work... it reminds me of YOU! Me gusta! :) Due viernes. viernes Try to score some XP (at least 20) on Duolingo today if you haven't been on this week. Stories are the best, but it's your choice. And here's otro chiste en español just for you.... Spanish Zoom Classes Mondays 3rd hr 9-9:30am 4th hr 9:30-10 6th hr 11-11:30 Tuesdays 9th hr 1:30-2pm *check student email for link! lunes Ready for another week? TU PUEDES HACERLO! Today I'd like you to revisit María y Federico and watch the Pop-Up version video of El Banco. This can be found along with the other video options when you click on "El Banco." Now, I have a question for you... ¿dónde estabas ayer a las tres menos cuarto? Just kidding. What I really want to know is did you really only do those two little nuggets last week? If so, then today you will do nugget THREE. If you were a super estudiante and already did it last week, you're all done for the day. martes It's Taco Tuesday! And what better day for it than el cinco de mayo? Wait... are you just now putting those two together? Cuál es la fecha? Hoy es el cinco de mayo. (And hey, do me a favor and pronounce it correctly, would ya? MA-YO. Not like mayo-naisse!) Here's an interesting little video to watch that sums up three important facts about El Cinco de Mayo: 1. It does indeed have to do with Mexico. 2. It is most definitely NOT their Independence Day. (Viva Mexico! el 16 de septiembre!) 3. It is not even celebrated in Mexico, except in Puebla - where the battle happened in 1852. And now watch this artsy video from Spanish musical artist Alvaro Soler entitled, "Puebla." It has both the Spanish and English lyrics included in the video. As you watch, pause the video and make a list of at least 10 different Spanish verbs used in the song and what they mean in English. Send me a pic/scan of your list by Friday. miércoles OK, who's up for un chiste en español? A joke, anyone? ¿Qué hace un pez? Alrighty then. Back to serious academics. Today I want you you to write about your hobbies and sports. Use your new Deportes y Pasatiempos vocabulary (can be found on Quizlet). What do you like to do in your free time? Why? What details can you tell me about it - where do you play? with whom? when? what time of year? what is it the sport/activity like? What other things do you like to do? Write at least 10 good sentences in Spanish. Use me gusta/me encanta as well as a variety of other action verbs that describe what you do. Look through your verb lists for ideas, as well as any other vocab lists you may have. Go deep with details - WITHOUT TRANSLATING SENTENCES ON GOOGLE TRANSLATE! Keep your description within the limits of your language-- show me what you can do with what you know! If you do need to look up a word, please highlight it and define it at the bottom of your paper. Due Friday, hand written, por favor! jueves The file below entitled "El Interrogatorio" is an off shoot of El Banco. You will recognize some familiar phrases and vocabulary that will help you read and understand it. There are also footnoted words at the bottom of the page to help. Read through the story at least once (darker color). Then read through it again to help you answer the questions on the second document (lighter color). You may print this and hand write the answers, then email me a photo or scan. You may also markup the PDF on your phone/ipad and email it back to me. As usual, due Friday.
viernes Count to ten in Spanish. Actually, outloud. Here we go. Uno, dos, tres.... Now count backwards from 10. (Yes, in Spanish!) Now try to count by tens to 100. Can you do it backwards? (cien, noventa, ochenta...) How about un truco (a trick)? See if you can follow along with numbers in Spanish. 1. Think of any número en español entre 1-25. 2. Subtract uno. 3. Multiply that by tres. 4. Add doce (NOT dos!) 5. Divide that número by tres. 6. Add cinco. 7. Subtract your ORIGINAL número (from step 1). Let me guess... ¿tu número es OCHO? Yo soy mágica! Jokes AND magic in one week, wow! Hasta luego, estudiantes! ¡Que tengan un buen fin de semana! Zoom Class Schedule Mondays Tuesdays 3rd hour: 9-9:30am 9th hour: 1:30-2p 4th hour: 9:30-10 6th hour 11-11:30 *check student email for link! ¡Vamos a hablar el español! lunes This week I'm bringing a little Señor Wooly to the table. The song is called, "El Banco." It has a great story line, and makes use of el pretérito - the past tense. Watch it first with English subtitles to understand the lyrics better. Then watch it with the Spanish subtitles and notice the past tense verbs. Complete just TWO nuggets by Friday (but who can resist doing just one more?) martes Practice el pretérito on Conjuguemos. You will see the assignment entitled "Preterit Tense: Regular Verbs Only." This is a list of 20 common verbs that you have already learned. Set the timer to 5 minutos...this one's a race! How many correct conjugations can you do in 5 minutos? GAME ON! You can play multiple times to improve your score if you wish, but you may not extend any single session beyond 5 minutes. To get credit for this assignment, you'll need a minimum of 15 correct! As always, due viernes. miércoles Back to Federico y María... y el detective. ¿Quién robó el banco? Today you will watch, listen, and read along with a retelling of the story. On the Señor Wooly website, under the Banco videos tab, find the video entitled, "¿Robaron el banco?" Pay special attention to the past tense used with the verbs "robar", "vender," and "confesar." Pause the video as needed to read and process what it means. Next, download the worksheet below and answer the questions to show your comprehension. You may choose to answer them en español (for more challenge) or en inglés. Email me a photo, scan, or markup of your responses. Due Friday.
jueves What do you think... time for a 7th inning stretch? Just like in un partido de beísbol, let's take a little break, shall we? No tarea hoy! :) viernes Today you'll be a detective yourself as you try to figure out this shredded clue! Print the file below, grab some scissors and cut out the pieces, and see if you can put it all together to read the destroyed message. Then, use the second file to write in the English translation. Email me a photo or scan of the English translation by Friday (hoy).
But wait just one sec. Espera un momentito. I remember something about María going to the movies... do you? And she didn't ask us to go, or even Federico! She went with someone ELSE! "Van solos sin nosotros..." If you remember who Maria went to the cine with, add it to the bottom of Friday's worksheet! Eres un detective fenomenal! ¡Tengan un buen fin de semana! |
